This scene is typical of the feeling I got on an every day basis living in this small rural town in Japan.
The residents lead a quiet and wholesome life. Kids can freely ride their bikes to and from school, and the pace
of life is slower and more relaxed than the larger cities. This is the way life used to be. It's a healthy
lifestyle. People all know each other and everyone has a garden.
This painting was taken in the Nyoza district in Usuki, Japan on a warm fall day. I was sitting in the
historical district on the side of the road and some local kids came riding by on their way home from
basketball practice. They said something to me and then looked back and laughed, then continued riding
home. Just a normal day. Sometimes those are the best days - just a normal day with friends.
