Occupy Walt Street
Title: Occupy Walt Street
Year: 2011
Size: 15"x22""
|
Watercolor Painting on Arches rough. 15"x22".
In 2011 thousands of people around the United States took to the streets and occupied city centers to protest the tax laws and legislation
that has increasingly favored the rich - the very very rich -while the rest of us, the 99% can no longer afford houses, health care and basic
goods. The disparity in wealth has increased greatly since Ronald Reagan, who began the war on the middle class.
Some on the right side of the political isle feel that we, the 99%, are asking for hand outs and we should work harder. I say "bite me". We work
plenty hard. Our goal isn't hand outs or welfare. All we want is a level playing field. Personally I've never taken anything from the government,
unless you count the student loans that I paid back at a higher interest rate than my car!
We don't think corporations are people, and we're tired
of the law saying that corporations are people, and then giving them more rights than real people. The time has come for real people to take back
democracy, which has been sold to the highest bidder in Washington. What's worse is that unlimted lobbying by foreign corporations and interests
means that Chinese factories now have more access to our politicians that we do.
As long as lobbying money and corporations decide the agenda for our politicians, it doesn't matter who we elect. In the end corporate interests
own the agenda, and this ludicrous game gives the impression that we live in a democracy, when in fact we don't. It's a pretend democracy, a cartoon
democracy where the likes of Walt Disney can extend copyright beyond 100 years, but the rest of us have no voice. But with 70 registered lobbyists for
every single elected official in Washington DC, our once vibrant democracy is being destroyed by selfish and greedy elite who would have the 99%
believe that we're lazy, unambitious, and simply need to work harder. Nonsense. Absolute nonsense.
